Why You Need A guide

Discover and Explore with Big Nature Guides

I get it. You’re a savvy traveller, you’re independent and a leader in what you do, but even YOU should hire a local guide. Let me tell you why.

Have you ever wondered what an ouzel is? Or the relationship between a Clark’s Nutcracker and White Bark Pine? Perhaps you don’t know the best trails or how to get off the beaten track to really experience the Canadian Rockies.

Mostly, I imagine, you don’t even know what you want to know.

That’s a job of the guide. Guides immerse you in the culture, create curiosity and answer questions. They tell stories of the first explorers in the area, of the peaks that were a race to climb in the early 1900’s, of why Bison were reintroduced.

You will notice so much more, take better pictures and have greater memories.

Imagine that an august snowstorm made a pass unpassable.

Or a big sow with cubs was picnicking on your trail. Or you couldn’t find a place to park!

Guides have back up plans set up for the day. And back up plans for their back up plans! There is an abundant of beauty in the Rockies which we can’t wait to show you. WE WILL ALWAYS find a great spot.

I’m a professional hiking guide. I can rock up to any wilderness around the world and know how to navigate it. But, find me in Los Angeles or Paris and I’ll be as lost as if a helicopter dropped you off in the middle of the backcountry without food or water and days from civilization. Even I hire a guide when I go to big cities. Not only will I then actually leave my hotel room! But I’ll learn the history, architecture and the narrative of that area.

We go home more enriched from our experiences when we hire a guide.

Have you wanted to see Lake Louise? Do you know it is one of the most photographed places in Canada? You can stand on the shore with a thousand of your new friends if you want to, but hire us for the day and we can bring you to a quiet spot with the most astonishing view, where you’ll be able to hear the birds and your breath. Don’t let the romance of Lake Louise be ruined because you felt like you were swimming through a crowd all day.

You discover.

It’s tough to see the scenery when your staring at the highway because it’s too busy, or even worse, too icy. Or your partner is frustrated when you missed the turn off leading to that glacier blue lake.

Big Nature Guides in the Canadian Rockies can help you discover and learn about these mountains and Canada’s first national park.

Hiring a guide is just safer.

Big Nature Qualified

Let’s face it. Do you devote all your free time to being out cell service, on remote trails in crazy mountain weather? Our guides do. And they know how to make it a much safer experience. If you spend most of your life on engineered sidewalks, they can re-teach you how to walk, how to use poles, how to make it to the top of the pass because they showed you what we call the “mountaineers’ step. They carry first aid supplies, know how to use bear spray and who to call if there’s an emergency.

But I don’t want to make you nervous, because the bottom line is hiring a guide is just more fun.
